- Millennials/Hispanics Fastest-Growing Dessert Demographic
Did you know that Millennials (consumers ages 16-32) are the fastest growing demographic for dessert consumption? It’s true - and with Millennials now making up one-third of the “Heavy Dessert User” category, it’s well worth bringing on new dessert items catering to younger tastes.
Especially those of our growing Hispanic population.
With 41% of the US Hispanic population under the age of 29, and a median age of 27, Hispanics are a vital dessert menu target market due to their purchasing power and age demographic. And with interest in ethnic foods and new flavor combinations continuing to soar nationally, dessert choices like Capirotada (Mexican Bread Pudding), Sopapilla Cheesecake and the always-popular Flan are great choices for building new customer relationships and a better bottom line.

- Bakery/Café Tops LSR Category
The Bakery/Café Category grew 11% from 2011-2012, owning 87% of sales in the Top 500 Limited-Service Restaurant (LSR) market.
- Build Check Averages With Dessert
Dessert consumption is at its highest level in six years, with 70% of consumers eating dessert after a meal at least once a week and 40% enjoying dessert at least twice a week. This creates a great opportunity to build check averages with add-ons.
To maximize dessert orders, keep in mind your younger customer’s tastes.
Why? Millennials, Gen Z and Gen X consumers are twice as likely as Baby Boomers and Matures to eat a restaurant meal, then visit a different concept for dessert. Younger consumers indicate a greater preference for cookies, brownies and milkshakes, which may speak to a greater need for portability among these busy consumers.
- Mini Desserts - A Trend Worth Following
The most common reason given by consumers for not ordering dessert is “too full from my meal.” In response, miniature desserts continue to appear at restaurants in all segments. Quick-service operators are well-positioned to offer these mini bites as takeout snacks, while some full-service concepts have found success with post-meal indulgences and mini-dessert tasting flights.
Wondering what desserts are hottest? What time of evening your portion sizes should shrink? Or what items to add to the menu to drive growth in your particular customer demographic? You’ve come to the right place!
